Eksempel’s design brief and product development process has put a special emphasis on mono-materiality, design for disassembly and functional durability. Their design brief is a positive creative constraint for looking deeper into the design of each product. When it comes to mono-materiality, Eksempel realised that rethinking is required for every single item used in a product, e.g. tread, trim, interfacing and care labels.

The brand, working to gather more knowledge and information about designing for disassembly, focuses on mono-materiality and having little to no trimmings and to avoiding glues, films and mixed fibre materials. This facilitates separating, re-using and re-cycling a product’s parts when discarded. Eksempel is also examining how to design using fewer components in each style as fewer cuts and seams result in quicker, easier disassembly.
